THE legacy of Harold Starr will live on with his name becoming a frequent sight along the Great Western mainline as he notches up speeds of 100mph. Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester was guest of honour on platform one at Swindon Railway Station on Tuesday where he proudly unveiled a commemorative plaque to Swindon’s heroic Battle of Britain squadron leader. The prince carried out a naming ceremony to officially dedicate the train in memory of those who lost their lives during the Battle of Britain, while unveiling the polished letters that spell out Harold’s name on the side of the First Great Western High Speed Train. First Great Western was the main sponsor of the week-long series of events held in the town, and arranged for the Class 43 locomotive to be at the station for the naming ceremony, where it appeared in the rather unusual formation of being back to back with another engine. General manager for the Central region, Rob Mullen said: “We are delighted to be able pay our due respects to the heroes of 253 Squadron and RAF Fighter Command, and we’re proud to be naming one of our High Speed Trains in honour of Harold. It is important as a country that we commemorate this anniversary, and remember those who bravely gave so much.” Related links The Swindon-born pilot rose to be the leader of 253 Squadron, but was killed during the Battle of Britain which saw him bail out of his plane at 15,000 feet over Kent. He was machine gunned to death as he descended in his parachute when three Bf 109s came back for him. The battle was arguably the most significant single victory in the Second World War, averting the invasion that seemed inevitable after the defeat at Dunkirk in the spring of 1940. With the Luftwaffe unable to gain air superiority over the Royal Air Force during that summer, Hitler abandoned his invasion plans for that October. Winston Churchill said of the aircrew: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Those few were 2,353 pilots and crew who took part in the Battle of Britain between July and October 1940, when 544 of them died. Wing Commander Richard Summers, 93, joined the RAF as soon as he left school aged 18. He flew with No. 219 Squadron RAF during the battle. After later fought in Africa and survived after being shot down in Liberia in 1941. He avoided capture by walking 48 miles barefoot and taking to the sea, where he was picked up by a British merchant ship. Wing Commander Paul Farnes, 97, was known as an expert pilot during the Battle of Britain. He had a total of eight confirmed kills during the war and in October 1940 he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal and commissioned as an officer. Speaking of the human cost of the Battle of Britain he said: “You didn’t really have time to make friends. A chap would come and join the squadron and he’d probably last 24 hours, 48 hours and you wouldn’t see him again.” Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum, 94, joined the RAF in August 1939, aged just 17, and was flying his first combat missions within months. He was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, promoted to Flight Commander and, in 1942, transferred to the Mediterranean to lead a group of eight Spitfires patrolling the skies above Malta. Flying Officer Ken Wilkinson, 97, flew Spitfires with 616 Squadron under Sir Douglas Bader, who lost both his legs in a crash but was accepted as a pilot at the start of the war. He said: “I thought, ‘you’ve got no chance’ lasting through whatever is going to be. It was quite obvious, in the way the Germans were moving, they were going to make a hell of a war out of it, so I was ready for war. “We were cocky. Stupidly cocky, if you like. We just didn’t envisage defeat. Some people may have been killed, but we knew we were going to win.” Squadron Leader Tony Pickering, 95, was just 19 and had only a few completed a few practice flights, when he was sent into battle as a Hurricane pilot. Two months into his combat career he was shot down. He parachuted from 18,000 feet, didn’t suffer a scratch and was back in action 24 hours later. He was based at Gravesend with 501 Squadron and was often on 15-minute stand-by waiting to repel enemy attacks, and lost friends in the battle. He said those who survived did not dwell on the losses. He said: “It was terrible when friends died, but at 19 you just think ‘there another one gone’ and don’t let it get to you.” Wing Commander Tom Neil, 95, Neil flew 141 combat missions during the Battle of Britain which he claims to have survived by being lucky and ducking and weaving in the air. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for “acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty”. Last week Prince Harry gave up his seat in a Spitfire for Mr Neil after technical problems meant there were not enough spaces during a memorial flight.
