フィリピン軍の近代化へ向け協力姿勢＝米国

ジェームズ・マティス米国防長官は、デルフィン・ロレンザーナ比国防長官に対し、米国がフィリピン軍の近代化に協力していく意向を示した。これについて日曜日、米国防総省のジェフ・デイヴィス報道官が発表した。
両国防長官の会談は、アジア・太平洋地域の安全保障会議（シャングリラ対話）の場で行われた。「マティス国防長官は、フィリピン軍の近代化の実現に向け米国が協力していくことを約束し、両国間の軍事分野におけるさらなる協力の深化の重要性を強調した」とデイヴィス報道官が声明を出した。また、デイヴィス報道官は声明で、両国防長官がテロリズムとの闘いに関して議論したこと、テロリズムや他民族の脅威拡大に関する情報共有の促進への合意、そして米軍が過激派組織に対して協調して対抗していく意向を示したことに関しても触れた。

１９５１年８月３０日に米国で調印された合意書によれば、フィリピンは米国の軍事同盟国である。両国は毎年、合同軍事演習を実施しているが、２０１６年６月にロドリゴ・ドゥテルテ氏が大統領職に就任して以来、緊張関係にある。今年２月に同氏は、フィリピン軍の、米国が関わるあらゆる軍事紛争への参加を認めないとする旨の声明を出している。
