EL-ARISH, Egypt — A group of Sudanese migrants were caught up Sunday in the crossfire of a gun battle between Egyptian security forces and Bedouin smugglers as they were about to illegally enter Israel from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, security and hospital officials said. Fifteen of the migrants were killed and eight were wounded, they said. An additional eight migrants, who were unhurt in the incident, were arrested by the Egyptians and were being interrogated, the officials said. The officials earlier said that the 15 Sudanese migrants were killed by security forces as they approached the wire fence separating Sinai from Israel at a border point about 12 miles south of Rafah, an Egyptian town on the border with the Gaza Strip. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the police, had no immediate comment on the incident. Most of the wounded were in serious condition with injuries to their abdomens, the officials said. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. The death of the 15 migrants ended a lull in attempts to cross into Israel from Sinai, mostly because of stricter surveillance and stepped-up military operations in the area by Egyptian security forces battling Islamist militants led by a local affiliate of the extremist Islamic State group. The Islamic State has occupied vast swaths of Iraq and Syria since summer 2014 and has been expanding its presence in many other countries, including Libya and Afghanistan. Sunday’s death toll is among the highest in a single incident involving Sudanese migrants in Egypt since 2005, when Egyptian riot police used water cannons and truncheons to clear a ramshackle encampment set up by Sudanese refugees in an upscale Cairo neighborhood. The migrants had hoped to draw attention to their demands to be resettled in a third country. Israel’s Interior Ministry said that more than 45,000 African migrants and asylum seekers, including many Sudanese, are in Israel. Many say they are fleeing conflict and persecution and are seeking refugee status. Israel says, however, that they are economic migrants whose growing numbers threaten the country’s Jewish character. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/15-sudanese-migrants-killed-near-egypts-border-with-israel/2015/11/15/9bac5dba-8bd7-11e5-ae1f-af46b7df8483_story.html Who were unhurt in the incident. The circumstances of Sunday’s shooting were unclear, and Egyptian government officials refused to comment on the deaths. A senior security official in northern Sinai, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media, said that the Egyptian border police had shot the migrants when they ignored warnings not to cross the border fence. Fifteen were killed and at least eight others wounded, the official said, adding that another eight migrants had been arrested. But another Egyptian security official said that the Sudanese migrants had been caught in the middle of a shootout between Bedouin smugglers and the Egyptian police, and that they had been killed in the crossfire. And Reuters, citing security sources, said the police had found the migrants’ bodies near the border. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/16/world/middleeast/egypt-israel-border-sudan-refugees-shot.html News reports would be one of the years. CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian security forces shot dead 24 Islamic State militants in central Sinai, 70 km from the crash site of the Russian passenger plane the group claimed it brought down, security sources said on Monday. Security sources said they killed the militants as they hid inside a cave in a mountainous area and that they arrested eight of them. Sinai Province, Islamic State's Egypt branch, is active in North Sinai where two years ago it launched an insurgency and has since killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen. It is rarely active outside that area. Western governments said it was likely that the Russian airliner that crashed in the Sinai on Oct. 31 killing all 224 people on board was brought down by a bomb and Islamic State claimed it was behind the crash. Egypt says the bomb theory is premature and that only the conclusion of an official investigation will shed light on what brought down the Airbus 321. Sinai Province said in a statement on the day of the crash that it had brought down the plane in response to Russian air strikes in Syria.
