The world's best-known horse whisperer, American Monty Roberts, gave a demonstration in taming a mare in front of one of the world's best-known equine lovers. Queen Elizabeth swapped the gowns and jewels from her visit Tuesday with Chinese President Xi Jinping to watch the demonstration of Roberts' talents in the palace mews Wednesday. There to promote a charity that is supported by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Roberts showed how he could get a horse ready to take a rider in less than an hour – it typically can take weeks. He was doing so in his capacity as an ambassador for the The Brooke animal welfare charity that helps improve the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules. The Queen, 89, was a surprise addition to the event, which was hosted by Camilla, who welcomed her mother-in-law with a curtsy. The monarch watched as Roberts saddled formerly difficult horse Jess in about 15 minutes and a rider was in position a short time later. "It had been known as a problem horse, but he showed if you handle a horse lightly then that's what they expect from you and respond to that," says a royal source. "It was fascinating and interesting to watch." After the demonstration, Roberts, 80, (who previously revealed that his friend the Queen has stopped taking on new corgis) told of the effect that the monarch has had on his life. "If she hadn’t pushed me, I’d be a cowboy in California doing parochial stuff," he said. He told how he first met her when she summoned him, sending "a man over to California." He added, "I thought it was a joke." He joined the Queen at Windsor Castle in April 1989. "Her Majesty had 23 horses ready for me to work with and it was one week with Her Majesty there every day, when it was only supposed to be one hour.
"She said there had to be a book, and she sent me to 21 cities in 30 days because she wanted this message out there. "Every year, two, three, four times a year that we get together, we discuss what’s happened, we discuss what we want to do.” Camilla has been patron of The Brooke since 2006. The charity works to improving and protecting the lives of working animals. There are thought to be 100 million working equines powering the developing world, supporting the livelihoods of 600 million people. PR
